Is the real estate industry on the eve of a leadership crisis? Despite the still flourishing economy, the current leadership tools are no longer sufficient to meet the social and digital challenges faced by leaders. The need for PropTech leadership with a social issue as a starting point is growing.

The real estate sector is in a rare moment in history, where we are experiencing a shift in the organizational context. We are moving from the dominant industrial paradigm to a data paradigm, characterized by changes in the way we lead, follow and organize. This paradigm is fuelled by major social issues and trends, including digitization. It is a (r)evolution and will have far-reaching consequences, as will the transition from agriculture to industrial production.

In the new paradigm it is no longer possible to lead on the basis of power, but only to lead on the basis of who you really are. There can no longer be much difference between the behavior that leaders show the world and who they really are. The people who work with them feel this, making these leaders less effective. The end of the monkey rock is insight. Leadership is no longer about the mountain top, the scepter, and the throne and about power, but comes from the heart of the leader in the heart of the organization. We go from ‘horizontal’ to ‘vertical’ leadership.

Today’s leaders can play an important role in the transformation to the new reality. They can help by stimulating new ideas and showing new behavior. Leadership is about being able to make a difference in the world you live in and making connections between the inner and outer worlds. People choose to work for organizations because they agree with their goals, but they leave when they no longer have respect for their boss. They want a leader who gives them space, who is reliable, respectful, compassionate and visionary. Someone who gives them a feeling of connection, a feeling that they are cared for, who makes them feel safe, who recognizes and acknowledges them as individuals and goes with the times.

Leaders can only embody these qualities if they know who they are. To know who they are, leaders will have to make the journey inside. They can no longer work with their brains alone but also need heart and soul. In order to make the connection with their colleagues, they first have to get the connection with themselves clear. Not as an end in itself, because leaders are not hermits who meditate on the top of a mountain. The journey inside makes the leader a better person and a more effective leader. He or she contributes to future-proof (more effective, joyful and effective) and PropTech companies ultimately contribute to future-proof environments for everyone. A leader exists by the grace of his followers. Followers feel intuitively whether the leaders connect with them. Only when they feel the connection are, they willing to go the extra mile. And in the end, the leaders don’t create more followers. They create more leaders.

Every day, leaders are challenged to grow their business, making it necessary to innovate and shape the business of tomorrow. Fortunately, leadership is not limited to people in top positions. Sometimes informal leaders make the difference: the innovation manager who organizes a hackathon on his own initiative, the neighbor who improves the living environment in the street. We need more ‘kick-ass saints’. Leaders who really make a difference, who want to invent the future of real estate and create ground-breaking future proof environments for everyone.

Proptech for good helps the alliance to make a difference in the rapidly changing world of real estate and the built environment. We empower leaders to take their organizations to the next level, in line with social and digital ambitions. We believe in the power of existing organizations to reinvent themselves and adapt to the new reality. With a unique Leadership Programs we let the leader look at himself, the organization and the environment in a new progressive way. We provide a surprising cross-sectoral learning experience and accelerate PropTech experiments and projects.  In the end, the leaders create a future proof company in his or her own way.

We invite you to look inside yourself, your company and the world. We wish you a good and not too safe journey to PropTech leadership to create future proof environments for everyone..
